Close to the Piazza Vittorio Veneto is Teatro Comunale (City Theatre), the most important concert hall in the whole of Florence. Over the years, many famous names have performed on the stage of Florence's Teatro Comunale (City Theatre), including Maria Callas, Pietro Mascagni, Richard Strauss, Igor Stravinsky and Luciano Berio, to name but a few.
Originally the Politeama Fiorentino, an open-air amphitheatre, the existing Teatro Comunale (City Theatre) building was designed by Telemaco Bonaiuti in 1862 and the main theatre area can accommodate around 2,000 people. Attractions at Florence's Teatro Comunale include many concerts, operas, festivals and exciting events throughout the year, including the famous Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.
