The Santa Maria Novella is one of the most important Gothic churches in Florence and the whole of Tuscany. Florence's Santa Maria Novella is the first church, called Santa Maria delle Vigne, and dates back to 1094.
In 1221 the Dominicans were given the church and building work began several years later, when the present Santa Maria Novella church was built. The striped facade of the Santa Maria Novella was completed in 1470 by Leon Battista Alberti.
Attractions at Florence's Santa Maria Novella include Masaccio's Trinity, a Giotto crucifix in the sacristy, and many frescoes created by Ghirlandaio. The Santa Maria Novella church is easy to reach, being located near to the Santa Maria Novella railway station in central Florence.
