 The Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) in Florence was constructed in 1345, and is now the oldest bridge in the whole of Florence. Spanning the River Arno, Florence's Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) is a three-arched bridge and was the only bridge in Florence to survive the bombings during the Second World War.
Lined with shops, including many gold and silversmiths, the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) is a popular shopping area in Florence. Some of the shops along the Ponte Vecchio have workshops at the back which literally overhang the river, being supported by large wooden rests.
Other attractions at Florence's Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) include a secret passageway high above the shops - the Corrodoio Vasariano, connecting the Uffizi Gallery to the Pitti Palace. This corridor was originally built so that the wealthy Medici family could walk into the centre of Florence in private and has only recently been reopened to the public.
