During the 15th and 16th centuries, several luxurious villas were built by the Medicis throughout the countryside around Florence, and the Medici Villas are truly beautiful buildings, well worth a visit.
The finest of the Medici Villas, nearby Florence, is the Villa della Petraia, which contains some splendid landscaped gardens and dates back to 1576, when it was originally commissioned by Cardinal Ferdinand de' Medici. To the north of the Villa della Petraia is the Villa di Castello, another of the Medici Villas which was once the summer retreat of Lorenzo the Magnificent. The Medici Villas are located on the outskirts of Florence, within easy reach of Florence city centre.
