Florence's Campanile di Giotto (Giotto Belltower) is an outstanding example of Gothic architecture and is one of the finest belltowers in Italy.
Building of Campanile di Giotto commenced in 1334 by Giotto, and after the artist's death several years later, the Florence belltower was finally completed in 1359 by Francesco Talenti. Standing at almost 85 metres / 275 feet high, Florence's Campanile di Giotto was built so that the town bells could be heard far and wide, and was used to announce mass, celebrations or at times, to warn of impending danger to Florence.
